You summed it up pretty much how I did on a message board (yeah, I'm a dork like that): We saw Omar as a superhero, when in reality he was just an indigent, no friend or family having lowlife who got got by the game. About 45 seconds before it happened, did you not get an empty feeling in the pit of your stomach. You knew it was coming. The way the whole thing was handled, the mixup at the very end...The story getting bumped from the paper...that just shows how deep the Wire is. How something that means so much to you in a show, can just be forgotten in the "real world". Next episode is dope too! Shits going down! Told you.
